Dasain: Grilled foods, wo, bara
Dashain the longest and most celebrated festival in Nepal is running since ancient times. Taking place between August and October, the festival is celebrated in span of 15 days. During this period dishes as wo (lentil pancakes), dahi chiura (curd and beaten rice) and khir (rice pudding) are consumed by the members of family gathered in one roof.
Wo (lentil pancakes) is traditional dish that rules Newar community. It is widely used between festivals. It is usually mixture of various grains that taste awesome after perfect seasoning. Usually mixed with another dish, wo is a dish worth trying. Mix wo with chowela (a special Newari dish made up of buffalo meat). The taste of the resulting dish may remind you of chicken nuggets. Similarly, eggs can also be mixed with wo. Some people may refer wo to bara. Ginger and Turmeric are basically the most used spices in making wo. This dish is grilled while preparing and multiple flavors may be iterated accordingly. The grilled beef/ pork/ chicken tastes could be in same category as wo. The grilled fish is served with wo at the events.
 The dishes bring families together living miles away separated from various reasons. Aside from filling the stomach and revoking hunger, the festival binds the fragile bond among relatives and heals the wounds inflicted to the human emotion. The tenth day, also known as Bijaya Dasami, is the at the top hierarchy of the days in Dashain. This day the elders, usually the grand members of the family put tika (mixture of yogurt, rice and vermilion) on foreheads of the younger members of the family. The activity is not exclusive to the primary kins of the family but also other members who are related through common activities recurring throughout the living.Â
Tihar: The festival of Lights, chocolates, sweets
The festival dispels the shadow of the night, illuminating the vibrant pattern to the living and bringing the joy of light. Special servings like sel roti (rice doughnuts) and yomari (sweet dumpling) are consumed throughout the festival. Each day of Tihar adds significance to human life, emotions and joy. The five days spent in Tihar is worth each and every penny you spend. The joy you potentially gain in Tihar is unlike another. The highlight of the Tihar is Laxmi Puja, the third day is celebrated offering and worshipping to the Hindu goddess of wealth Laxmi. The day is spent coloring the house floor with unique patterns and textures that mesmerize human consciousness. And at the end, Bhai tika is celebrated, where sisters worship brother with gifts that usually composes of chocolates and sweets. Along with these two, there exists two extra days in Tihar, Kukur Tihar (People worship kennel in this day) and Kag Tihar (People worship crow this day).Â
During Tihar the houses are decorated with artificial lamps just like Christmas. Also, children go house to house greeting residents with lore rhyme of Tihar (Deusi and Bhailo), the children in return get small amount of money and sweets as per greetings. This particular events usually takes place whole night starting from early evening. This may remind some visitors of Halloween.Â
Yomari Punhi: Harvest Celebration, sweet dumpling
Yomari Punhi, a festival residing at the end of winter is celebrated to appease gods for good harvest. The festival is celebrated with highlight at ‘yomari’, a sweet dumpling filled with sesame seeds and molasses. The Yomari Punhi can be celebrated along with yet another dish, Momo. Momo, a dumpling filled with meat, beef, vegetables is a famous cuisine in Nepalese society. The shops selling this delight is distributed all across Kathmandu valley price ranging from Nepali Rupees 100 to 240. The general procedure to make yomari would be steaming dumpling filled with any key ingredients, dumpling being made in pyramid form using rice flour.
Nepal Sambhat: New Year Celebration, local drinks
Nepal Sambhat or Mha Puja is festival celebrated at new year of Nepal Sambhat Calander. Celebrated By Newari Community, the festival is filled with joy and gathering of men and women to pay gratitude to gods for healthy livelihood. At end of the day family members gather and worship each other for future welfare of all kins associated. It is celebrated at presence of Aila, a local liquor. This liquor can be compared to sake from Japan. Another alcoholic drink is Chyang made from fermented grains. The liquor is widely consumed in many cities of Nepal during the festival.
